How to make a photo look like it printed with low ink

A believable result comes from layering a few subtle defects rather than maxing one slider. Start from a mode, set the overall fade, then add mechanical faults one at a time:

Load a document
Drag and drop it onto the screen or click to browse (JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP). Colour photos with saturated areas show depletion most clearly, because the effect is most visible where colour drains out and the image collapses toward grey.

Pick an ink mode
CMYK is full colour, Black Only emulates a monochrome laser, Draft Mode is a light, fast, low-coverage pass, and Dying Cartridge is an aggressive preset with one channel already failing. Choose the one closest to the failure you want, then refine with the sliders.

Set the ink depletion level
This is the master fade control. Around 20 to 40% reads as a printer that is merely tired, with colours pale and blacks gone grey. Past 70% you get a nearly ghost-printed page. Set this before touching anything else so the other defects sit on top of the right base.

Drain individual cartridges
Pull one of the K, C, M or Y cartridge sliders down while the others stay full to simulate a single empty cartridge. This is the classic "why is everything red?" failure. Draining cyan leaves a warm red cast, draining magenta a green cast, draining yellow a cold blue cast. The four ink bars mirror your settings.

Add mechanical defects, sparingly
Banding Severity adds horizontal light rows, the laser and paper-feed symptom. Streak Density plus Streak Chaos add vertical inkjet nozzle streaks; density is how many, chaos is how broken and irregular. Colour Dropout removes colour in patches for intermittent contact. Paper Bleed spreads the ink for a wet or cheap-stock look. Keep each one low; a little reads as a real fault, a lot reads as a filter.

Re-streak and save
The streak pattern is randomised. Press Re-Streak to reroll it until the placement looks right, then press Save Output to download the full-resolution PNG. Clear removes the image and resets every control.

How a printer running low on ink degrades an image

A colour printer builds every tone from four inks: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). Each colour is laid down by its own cartridge or toner supply. As one runs low, that channel prints thinner while the others stay strong, so the whole image shifts toward the complementary colour. A failing cyan cartridge makes everything look warm and red; a failing yellow one turns skin and skies cold and blue.

Inkjet and laser printers fail differently. An inkjet pushes ink through hundreds of microscopic nozzles; when some clog or the supply drops, you get thin vertical streaks where those nozzles stopped firing, often ragged and intermittent. A laser printer drags toner across the page with a rotating drum and fuses it with heat; as toner runs out or the drum wears, you get horizontal bands of pale or missing print, repeating down the page at the drum's circumference.

On top of that, low overall coverage makes solid blacks turn grey, fine detail drops out entirely in the lightest areas, and cheap or slightly damp paper lets what ink there is spread and soften at the edges. This converter recreates each of those mechanisms as a separate control so you can combine them the way a real, tired printer would.

How do I make it look like one colour cartridge is empty?

Set that cartridge slider (for example Cyan) to zero or near zero and leave the others high. Or choose the Dying Cartridge ink mode, which drives one channel down for you.

What is the difference between banding and streaking?

Banding is horizontal: rows of lighter or missing print, typical of laser toner starvation and paper-feed problems. Streaking is vertical: thin lines from partially clogged inkjet nozzles.

Why does the streak pattern change every time?

Streaks are randomised on each render so they don't look like a repeating filter. Press the Re-Streak button to generate a fresh pattern, and keep pressing until the placement looks right.

Is this good for a zine or risograph aesthetic?

Yes. Use moderate depletion, a little banding, and either Black Only mode or drain two of the three colour cartridges for the flat, limited-ink look of cheap duplication.
